Jo Lavelle - Jeweller

My work is made from silver using traditional jewellery making techniques and casting. More recently I have added semi precious beads in particular to one off pieces.

My jewellery style is to create pieces with volume and movement that is achieved by using repeated forms rather like natures way of layering leaves or petals. To create my style I have used tags or loopy tags that are bunched in a variety of ways to form a kinetic, voluminous and textured effect that is pleasurable to the wearer.

My long standing range of jewellery is called Pompom and has been in production since 2001! It has proved so popular it has become a trademark and I carry on producing it alongside other ranges and one off and exhibition pieces. My current work is characterised by the use of hand cut stones added to brooches and neckpieces sitting alongside other units from my Pompom or Loopy range.

My inspirations date back to watching my relatives wearing jewellery, in particular charm bracelets that move, makes noise, tinkles, and are eye catching. This jewellery was the individual’s personal statement and to me is just as important as clothing.

What inspires you in your art?
My inspirations date back to watching my relatives wearing jewellery, in particular charm bracelets that move, make noise, tinkles, and are eye catching. I am also fascinated by the construction of jewellery and this led to my jewellery style of layering multiple units together to create textural voluminous jewellery that moves, makes noise and hopefully is eyecatching!!

What medium do you work in?
Silver, gold and semi-precious stones.

What are you looking forward to at Make it Up North?
Being part of a brand new show hosted in a great city and also exhibiting alongside a great selection of makers all from Up North!

What work are you showing at the event?
I will be showing my usual range of work with some special one off pieces made especially for Make it Up North.

If you could sit in a room with any artist….who would it be and what would you ask them?
Lucienne Day and I would ask her what it was like to be part of a new and exciting design movement in 50’s and 60’s Britain. She believed that good design should be affordable, and in 2003 told the Scotsman newspaper that she had been "very interested in modern painting although I didn’t want to be a painter. I put my inspiration from painting into my textiles, partly, because I suppose I was very practical. I still am. I wanted the work I was doing to be seen by people and be used by people. They had been starved of interesting things for their homes in the war years, either textiles or furniture."

Name your favourite quote/or philosophy to life?
One of Robin Days quotes "You don't need new, you need good"

If money was no object what piece of work would you create?
I would absolutely love to make some beautiful one off pieces in 18 carat gold for my collection.

Jo Lavelle will be showing her work at Make it Up North Event at The Guildhall in York on the 5th and 6th of October.  http://artmarkets.co.uk/artist/profile/86/jo-lavelle-jewellery

Sue Turton - Mixed Media

Artists Statement
I began my career in the early 1980’s designing hand knits, retailing to stores worldwide including Joyce in Hong Kong, Barneys in New York and Browns in London.
Recently I have combined hand knit and other traditional skills with laser technology to create a range of beautiful things.  From furniture to handmade cards each piece celebrates timeless elegance using reclaimed, vintage, and hand dyed and embroidered leather and silk.  I retail and exhibit to stores and galleries across the UK and also design laser cut swatches for international fashion companies such as Donna Karan, Anna Sui and Anthroplogie.

What inspires your art?
Anything and everything….. perhaps mainly travel and exhibitions.  I recently visited the Eduardo Paolozzi retrospective at Pallant House Gallery in Chichester.  His work is inspirational and he adapted his creativity to such a broad variety of disciplines including sculpture, prints, textiles, furniture, ceramics and even film.  I also was lucky to see a masterpiece by El Anatsui hanging outside the Royal Academy earlier this summer.

What medium do you work in?
Mixed media.  Anything from reclaimed wood and slate to leather and fine hand dyed silk.

What are you look forward to at Make it Up North?
York is an amazing city and the Guildhall will be the perfect environment to show my work.  I am also looking forward to meeting other artists and the public.

What work are you showing at this event?
My work will include furniture, leather and hand dyed silk throws, handmade cards, reclaimed slate  engraved with 23.5 carat gold leaf, leather bound sketchbooks and framed delicate hand knit samplers embellished with gold leather.

If you could sit in a room with any artist …. who would it be and what would you ask them?
I could not choose one artist.  My dream would be to fill a room with artists from various disciplines including fashion, film, textiles, photography, fine art, graphics and listen to them discussing what inspires them.

Name your favourite quote/philosophy to life.
There is beauty in imperfection.

David Meredith - Artist

What inspires you in your art?
Wildlife in general, love the way nature interacts with it's environment

What medium do you work in?
Bronze

What are you looking forward to at Make it Up North
Sales, hopefully!...er, i mean discussing my work with the good people of York!

What work are you showing at the event?
Various of my small to medium peices.

Have you any exciting news to share?
Working on a very large piece, 3m tall, called Balios, as a private commission

If you could sit in a room with any artist….who would it be and what would you ask them?
Tracey Emin, i'd ask her how she got away with being so sucessful whilst having no real talent art?...then leg it!!
... in truth i don't really have any questions, most artists do what they do because they enjoy it, no different to myself, the rest is just hype

Name your favourite quote/or philosophy to life?
"Don't worry, be happy"

If money was no object what piece of work would you create?
A huge realistic sculpture to rival the colossus, I think most really big sculptures in the uk are pretty lame, local councils just go for modern art that no body understands or likes ( the angel of the north is a good exception), they just haven't got a clue!.
The americans have the right attitude to large sculpture, it's everywhere, check out the huge sculpture of crazy horse on google, it's being carved out of a mountain and mount Rushmore fits into its head!. Ok, we don't need to go that big. China are starting to follow suite I love the horses in Kangbashi.

David Meredith will be showing his work at Make it Up North on the 5th and 6th of October at The Guildhall in York.

Times for the event: Saturday 5th 10 - 6pm
                                   Sunday 6th 10 - 4pm

Paul Browne - Artist

Artist Statement

Everything I put down on paper or canvas is a direct result of my experiences. I am drawn to adventure, that might be on a mountain bike, or a walk or even trawling a city in search of a bar. It is apart of me, it is all around me. I observe everything. I can see mystery, ugliness, interest & beauty in a tired old building or a dusty old window.

Most of my images are an amalgum of one scene, or sometimes different angles or points of interest picked from a skyline.

Painting is a lifetime of wanderlust caputured & confined through the execution of my brush.

What inspires you in your art?
Adventure, story telling & expression.

What medium do you work in?
Oils & pen / ink

What are you looking forward to at Make it Up North
the unknown.

What work are you showing at the event?
A mix of my last 3 collections. urban scenes, rural & a lot of northern grit.

Have you any exciting news to share?
Before november, i'll have a new studio -- yay!

If you could sit in a room with any artist….who would it be and what would you ask them?
Eric drooker. He's the man. I'd ask him about his hopes & fears. I'm also interested in his ability to survive as a contemporary painter.

Name your favourite quote/or philosophy to life?
'To thy own self -- be true!'

If money was no object what piece of work would you create?
I'd create a lot of large public art for the people of oldham. I'd like to think I could create light & optimism in the darkest of valley's.

Artist Paul Browne will be showing his work at Make it Up North on the 5th and 6th of October at The Guildhall in York.
