Hilary Simms - Sculpture

Artist Statement

After working for a number of years in a small industrial ceramics workshop, my passion was to return to the hand building techniques of coiling and pinching the clay, slowly coaxing the clay into the desired form.

A trip to The Gambia provided the inspiration for my Nautilus collection. Shells and bones were collected on a deserted beach and these natural forms influenced my current work. The naked Raku finish seems to bring the forms to life. It is a very surprising and exciting way to finish my work.

What inspires you?
The possibility of making something better next time.

What are you looking forward to 'Make it Up North' ?
The venue looks really good, central location so hopefully lots of sales.

What work are you showing at the event?
My Nautilus collection, maybe one or two stoneware pieces this time.

If you could sit in a room with any artist who would it be? and what would you ask them?
I would ask Brendan Hesmondhalgh when he's going to get round to making the big bronze bull!!

Any Exciting news to share?
Just had 3 pieces accepted today by the Royal Society of Marine Artists exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London.

What is your Favourite Quote/philosophy to life?
"I can't go back to yesterday because I was a different person then." Lewis Carroll.

What would you create if you had everything available to you?
I would like to cast a favourite large Nautilus piece in bronze.

Hilary Simms will be showing her work at Make it Up North Event at The Guildhall in York on the 5th and 6th of October. Go to the website to find out more...artmarkets.co.uk See Hilary Simms artist's profile here on The Art Market Directory http://artmarkets.co.uk/artist/profile/61/hilary-simms
